The final Trans Tasman Athletics event ever took place at Mt Smart from 16-19 January. Two of our club members, Solomon Randerson and Henry Hills, took part, representing Owai with pride. Report and pics from Sol's mum, Megan, below:
"Owairaka athletes Solomon Randerson and Henry Hills were selected to be in the Trans Tasman team 2020. It was a very busy four days in the hot Auckland sun at Mt. Smart Stadium.
On Thursday there was a friendly ribbon meet, where the athletes competed in a couple of events and met the the Australian athletes. Friday was "Take an Aussie out" day. Each athlete was paired with an Australian athlete to spend the day with and show them around Auckland. It was a lot of fun and many souvenirs were exchanged.
Saturday was a team meeting and practice of songs and the haka. Sunday was challenge day! The opening ceremony was very exciting with team marching and singing and the New
Zealand team performed the haka.
Both boys had a fantastic day with great results. Henry was 5th in the 400m and 1st in the 4x400 relay. Solomon was 7th in the 1500m and 7th in the 800m.
Sadly 2020 was the last Trans Tasman Challenge Day, an emotional day for many of the volunteers and organisers, some who have been part of the event for over 20 years."
